Abstract

This study explores the specific English language needs of ground staff trainees in the aviation sector and develops ESP (English for Specific Purposes) materials that address those needs. Using a qualitative design, data were collected through interviews with aviation English instructors, and observations of airport service operations. The needs analysis revealed essential language competencies such as check-in procedures, boarding announcements, baggage-related communication, and handling passenger complaints. Based on the findings, a series of communicative, task-based learning materials was developed following the principles of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). These materials are designed to simulate real-world interactions and strengthen trainees’ ability to communicate effectively in professional settings. Importantly, the study emphasizes that equipping ground staff with targeted English communication skills not only enhances service quality but also contributes to improving safety and security in aviation. Feedback from a preliminary implementation indicated increased learner engagement and better preparedness for workplace communication. The results underscore the need for industry-aligned ESP instruction in vocational programs to support both operational efficiency and aviation safety standards.
